A New Approach to the Divine Love Ceremonies in Ancient Mesopotamia

The problem of the divine love ceremonies in Ancient Mesopotamia has attracted since more than a half century the specialists of Mesopotamian history. Many discussions have been presented until now. I myself once studied intensively on this subject, especially on the divine love ceremonies in the first millenium BCE in Babylonia and in Assyria. Sice a while, because of new papers published by Helsinki school assyriologists, I have been interested once more in this problem and decided to reexamine these ceremonies, in order to clalify the exact characteristics of the religious fenomena.This paper is somehow the part 2 of my recent short paper, " A proposal essay on the divine marriage in Mesopotamia", in C. Shinoda (ed.) , Mythologies, Symbols, Languages, part III (Rakuro-shoin, Nagoya, 2010), pp.121－132. I did not clearly notice in that paper the differences among the Sumerian Love Texts, dated between the end of third millenium to the begginning of the second millenium. After a ditailed analyse of so called Inanna Cycle texts, I found the fact that there are two types of Inanna : young pretty girl full of love passion and a great goddess of Uruk who grants a good fate and prosperity to the king of Sumer, her "lover". With this newly found fact, we may discover other aspects of the goddess Inanna, who has in fact an extremely complex caracter. Then, I hope, a new approach may be developped to these interesting but very complicated subject.
