This thesis clarifies the relationship between Shoin-ma, Abbot's room for drawing,and there garden at the Hojo, Zen residential architecture. And it also clarifies the trend of the design in there. At first, it's studied the characteristics of the Shoin-ma and there garden by comparison with the south-court of the Hojo. With the plan and the cross section, it's considered how Shoin-ma and there garden compose by catching them as three dimensions. From stones and trees in the garden next to Shoin-ma, it's considered what the meaning they made with. And from the ornament in the Shoin-ma and the painting on a Fusuma, sliding door used to partition off in a Japanese house, it's studied what the meaning and the idea there is. Next, catching of the background of the era, it's considered how the trend of the design in there changes. In this paper, it's taken as objects of study that has been conserved completely or be able to restore with source books and previous studies. To conclude, it is clarified that the garden next to Shoin-ma is designed as deep mountains and deep valleys. Until the middle of Muromachi period they have designed as a real mountain with real water and real pond. At the evening of Muromachi period, for example Daisen-in and Taizo-in, they have designed as virtual mountain, using "Mitate" which is a method of designing, with Karetaki, dried waterfall and Shirasuna, the white gravel meaning as water. From the Edo Period downward, the Hojo has been influenced from any culture outside Zen. But the garden next to Shoin-ma designed as deep mountains and deep valleys.
