The concept of career was born in the US along with the development of capitalism. When we discuss careers, we have to recognize what kind of age we are living in, what kind of situation Japan is facing in comparison with western countries and what is most important, what kind of history we have had, how different we are in terms of individuality and why we have developed these kinds of peculiar individualities. This set of notes, the second in this series, focuses on individuality and how we Japanese academics have though on this matter. This paper aims to introduce how famous Japanese intellectuals who encountered western culture since the Meiji Restoration have thought. Nearly all important scholars of philosophy, sociology, psychology, politics, history, economics and ethnology, as well as influential journalists are covered. This includes the following: 1. Yukichi Fukuzawa, Eiichi Shibusawa, Shouichi Gotoh 2. Masao Murayama, Hisao Otsuka, Takenori Kawashima 3. Chie Nakane, Hayao Kawai, Kinya Abe, Kanji Nishio 4. Hichihei Yamamoto, Ryotaro Shiba, Taichi Sakaiya, Ohio Katoh 5. Michio Morishima In addition, this paper introduces the current consensus opinions regarding on this issue, 1. Report by the Justice System Reform Council (Dec. 1999) 2. Report by conference sponsored by the Prime Minister on Japan’s Goals in the 21st Century: Individual empowerment and Better Governance in the New Millennium The interim conclusion is as follows: If we have to lead a life under this kind of capitalism, each of us can find relief in thinking of one’s own career design. Then, if one can pursue a good career, one can improve oneself and as an accumulation of each individual’s efforts we can achieve social reform.
