Liquid phase sintering of diamond with titanium copper, and tin was carried out in reducing atmosphere. The XRD data of sintered bodies indicated that they composed of diamond, titanium carbide, and intermetallic compound of copper and tin. The densification during sintering proceeded rapidly at 880℃ due to the liquid phase of intermetallic compound. TEM and EDX data of them showed that thin layer of titanium carbide was at a grain boundary between diamond particles and metals. The layer was confirmed to grow epitaxially on diamond particles. It was clarified that chemical bonding between titanium in titanium carbide and diamond was energetically more preferable than that between carbon and diamond.
