This article documents the memoirs of Mr. Iwao Kawanabe, a member of the staff of the Japan Productivity Center (JPC). Mr. Iwao Kawanabe entered JPC in 1960 and worked in the field of industrial relations until 1978. The organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) established as an organization under the Marshall Plan (European reconstruction plan) founded the Productivity Center in 1948 in response to the American government’s request. In Japan, it was established by the initiative of the Keizai Doyukai (Japan Association of Corporate Executives) in 1955. JPC had a great influence on changes in postwar industrial relations among Japanese companies. Although industrial relations in Japan were quite “confrontational” until the 1960’s they gradually changed to “cooperative industrial relations.” However, it is difficult to describe that shift from confrontational industrial relations. The role the JPC played is analyzed in detail. The memoirs of Mr. Iwao Kawanabe serve as important materials in understanding the history of industrial relations in Japan after the war. In this paper, the research method of Oral History is explained first, and the newly exhibited records are analyzed.
