The origin of the English language can be traced to the Anglo-Saxons in Britain in the early Middle Ages. One of the most impotaint historical events which led to the formation of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms was the migration to Britain of several Germanic tribes, such as the Angles,Saxons and Jutes(and presumably slso the Frisians)from the fifth century onwards. They gradually established their kingdoms, and in that process was forged the earliest form of the English language. Unfortunately, however, lttle is known about the procces other than from the fragmentary desciptions in Beda's ecclesiastical writings. So in order to obtain an sccurate image of the people who founded England and made English what it was,it is necessary to follow their historical traces before their migration to Britain. According to Tacitus, the Angles and some other Germanic tribes constituted a loosely knit tribal organization referred to as Suebi. And it is also known that during the period of the great Germanic migrations,Suebi were transformed into a single tribe, and on the other hand another Germanic tribe with a close connection with Suebi,Alemannen, emerged as a separate tribe. The aim of this paper is to survey the conjectures that have been made about the Suebi and Alemannen tribes, especially their origins and mutual relations. A deeper knowledge of these Germanic tribes would provide us with more clues to underatanding the Anglo-Saxons.
